In a groundbreaking initiative, the Workforce Development Board of Ventura County, Equus Workforce Solutions, and Cell-Ed have joined forces to implement the Sowing Seeds of Success program. This collaboration aims to transform the lives of farmworkers in one of California’s most productive agricultural regions.

 

The Workforce Development Board of Ventura County recently released in episode 32 of its podcast a description of the program titled “Cultivating Success- Ventura County’s Farmworker Support Program.”

The Partnership

The Sowing Seeds of Success program brings together three key players:

  1. Ventura County Workforce Development Board
  2. Equus Workforce Solutions
  3. Cell-Ed

 

This collaboration aims to provide comprehensive support and training to farmworkers, leveraging each organization’s strengths to create a holistic approach to workforce development in the agricultural sector.

 

Program Components

Skills Training

The program offers targeted skills training to help farmworkers enhance their capabilities and increase their earning potential. This includes:

  • English as a second language, digital skills and more! 
  • Coaching
  • Career navigation
  • Connection to support services 

 

Language Support

Recognizing the diverse linguistic background of many farmworkers, the program incorporates language support to ensure effective communication and learning. Cell-Ed’s mobile learning platform plays a crucial role in this aspect, providing:

  • English language courses
  • In-language content
  • On-demand, mobile learning platform

 

Career Development

The Sowing Seeds of Success program goes beyond immediate job skills, focusing on long-term career development for farmworkers. This includes:

  • Resume building 
  • Interview preparation
  • Career counseling
  • Information on advancement opportunities within the agricultural sector

 

 

Innovative Delivery Methods

One of the key features of the Sowing Seeds of Success program is its use of technology to reach farmworkers where they are. Cell-Ed’s mobile learning platform allows participants to access training materials and resources:

  • On their smartphones or basic feature phones
  • At times convenient to their work schedules
  • Without the need for internet connectivity

 

This flexibility ensures that even workers with limited time or technology access can benefit from the program.

 

The program is also leveraging the local Ventura County Farmworker Resource Program(FRP), within the County’s Human Services Agency. FRP focuses on building trust and relationships with farmworkers, promoting and enhancing the agricultural industry in Ventura County, educating farm workers on labor law, and assisting farmworkers in navigating public agencies. The FRP staff has provided valuable outreach to the indigenous community in the county, making sure to engage them in the Sowing Seeds of Success Program.

The Sowing Seeds of Success program represents a significant step forward in supporting Ventura County’s agricultural workforce. By combining the resources and expertise of the Workforce Development Board, Equus, and Cell-Ed, the program aims to:
