Honoring Farmworkers: Celebrating the Legacy of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta

On March 31st, we celebrated César Chávez Day, honoring a visionary leader and reaffirming that farmworkers are the backbone of our nation’s agricultural industry—working tirelessly to ensure food reaches our tables. Today, as we celebrate Dolores Huerta’s 95th birthday, we honor both Huerta and Chávez for their unwavering advocacy, which helped transform the landscape of labor rights in America.

The Legacy of Chávez and Huerta

In 1962, César Chávez and Dolores Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). Their mission was clear: to secure better wages, safer working conditions, and the right to unionize for farmworkers. Through nonviolent tactics such as boycotts, marches, and hunger strikes, they brought national attention to the plight of agricultural laborers. Chávez’s leadership in the Delano Grape Strike and the subsequent 340-mile march from Delano to Sacramento in 1966 highlighted the power of collective action. Huerta’s pivotal role in negotiating labor contracts and her coining of the rallying cry “¡Sí, se puede!” (“Yes, we can!”) galvanized countless individuals to join the movement.

Continuing the Fight for Farmworkers

While significant strides have been made much in part to the hard work of Cesar Chávez and Dolores Huerta, and the many farmworkers and community members who joined their plight… the journey toward equity and opportunity for farmworkers continues. Challenges such as language barriers, limited access to education, and technological disparities persist, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to support this vital community. However, most pervasive is the reality that many farmworkers lack a pathway to obtain legal status.
